Last Third

It is the most important moment of it fight. In it, bull and bullfighter are alone in the ring, measuring their forces, tempering, facing each other until death comes.

One should always respect his opponent, especially when he's a 1000lbs bull.
  • The bullfighter, dressed with the suit of lights. it is called el traje de luces because of the optical effect that the spangles that adorn it make. Bullfighters before the XVIII century used ante; from that century on silk prevailed. The eruption of foreign fashions didn't have influence in the ring, where the style of clothes remained isolated from the one in the streets), makes a toast or dedication, elevating the montera, that later on he will throw into the air. It is an old tradition
  • The passes begin with the muleta style cape, that should not be confused with the capote-- the first one is much smaller, red and governable, the second is larger (extended 108-120 cm) heavier, reinforced with rubber, and is used in the paseillo and when receiving the bull. The third of muleta begins with doblones de castigo or with pases por alto, depending on the strength of the noble beast. The classic pase of muleta is the natural way carried out with the muleta in the left hand and the ayudado or estoque in the right, the same luck orchestrated to the opposite side is called derechazo. The continuity of four or more passes of this type give as a result a shift or series that generally is finished off with a pase de pecho (chest pass).
  • After these passes comes the crucial moment, the estocada. To be able to make it, the bullfighter must place the bull correctly. This is called to equal the bull, which means forcing the bull to join the four paws parallelly. This way the scapulas open up so that the sword penetrates without complication.
  • The means of killing the animal has diverse means of accomplishing its task:

    • Volapié. The killer is overturned on the morrillo of the bull, without moving
    • .
    • Receiving. When attempting the volapié the bull charges and the matador lunges simultaneously.
    • All at the same time. Al intentar el volapié el toro embiste y la estocada se da a un mismo tiempo

After the death of the bull

After the final lunge, the prizes are received: at the request of the public the first ear is granted (a white handkerchief); the second (two white handkerchiefs), and the tail (a green handkerchief) as per the criteria of the presiding judge.

You will be able to see other handkerchiefs:
    • WHITE: means the Start (of the corrida), changes between each Third, warnings and exit of bulls.
    • GREEN means the bull must be returned to the corrals.
    • RED signifies that a couple of black banderillas must be used (for the clever bulls that don't go towards the horse).
    • YELLOW Concession for a reprieve for the bull due to a blow to the head.
    • BLUE Concession for the turning of the bull due to its rotation.
There's no crowd in the world as loud as Las Ventas..
