Buses
The network of Madrid Municipal Transportation (EMT) bus lines last totalled (at the end of 1998) 182 lines, of which 181 form the integrated network in which the habitual transport titles are valid (a simple ticket, Bono-Bus pass and Abono Transports monthly pass). This does not include the Plaza de Colón-Airport Line because it has a special tariff. The Network is fuelled by a fleet of 1814 vehicles.
The bus lines are numbered, and a few lines exist (2, 150...) that double over in which there is a second bus of that number but with a stripe through it. This means that the route is basically the same as the numbered one (without a stripe), but that some section (normally the end of line) differs slightly.
Two fundamental services exist. One, the daily route, that runs from 06:00. to midnight, and the nocturnal route, also known as the "owl" (Búho) that works at night. The Búho runs from 00:00 to 06:00. Within this framework, you are able to have bus service twenty-four hours a day.
At your time of travel by bus, you have to remember to pay the conductor upon entering or you can introduce a ticket into the machine that is located next to the bus driver. If you have a monthly pass (Abono Transportes) showing it to the conductor is enough.
The nocturnal service has always taken off from the Plaza de Cibeles, and from there they leave for their different destinations every half an hour from 00:00 to 03:00 and then every hour until 06:00 (the week ends have an augmented schedule with departures every twenty minutes all night). The prices are the same as those anywhere else in the capital. 20 different night routes exist.
The bus stops are indicated with a post with the number of the line written on it, the streets where it will pass (caution, sometimes a street have many different stops and that is not indicated), the direction which it travels, and highlighted in red the exact point of the route in which you stand.
In almost all stops you'll the famous bus stops, with glass walls and ceiling, in addition to some seats to make your wait more comfortable. You'll find that they can be very useful because everyone has a map of Madrid complete with all information about public transportation in Madrid.
The PRICE is the same as in Metro, 135 pts for the Simple Ticket and 705 for the 10 Trip ticket. Don't forget the Abono Transporte
Many stops are used for different lines.
The network of interurban buses of the province of Madrid was fully integrated; on December 31, 1998; adding 257 lines that reach a total of 309 inter-urban bus lines for zones B and C. Its operation is similar to the city lines, although its frequency usually is less. In the most heavily travelled routes (for example, the highway to la Coruña) they have a lane reserved for them, designated by cement markers (thus they force the other motorists to respect it) so that they can avoid daily traffic jams due to work, school, etc.
