Institutions
The city of Madrid has a representative, elected ASSEMBLY that personifies its form of local government. It approves and it controls the Budget of the Community, it impels, guides and controls all governmental action and responsibilities.
The Assembly is chosen every four years by means of a universal, free, and secret voting process, assisting to approaches of proportional representation. The Assembly is composed of a Deputy for every 50,000 inhabitants or superior fraction of 25,000; as determined by the most up-to-date population census. The Deputies' rotation finishes four years after their election.

Elections take place the fourth Sunday in May every four years.
It is this representative body that selects the community's respecting governing boards/councils (education, health, justice...).

This Assembly governs the 178 distinct municipalities of the Province of Madrid. One of them is the City of Madrid. The city is governed by the municipal corporation composed of the mayor and 52 councilmen.
