la Propina

  • the Tip (la Propina) What's the deal with Tipping?

This is a custom used with sparing frequency. In general, tips are not always expected. That is to say, a polite and considerate Americano tips 20% on top of the meal, but that would be like winning the lottery for a Spanish waiter unaccustomed to the ways of North Americans. 10% is a nice tip to be left behind, but don't try to be Mr. Frugal (eg. miserly, stingy, and downright nasty with your money) and separate tax and wine and bread and fresh air surcharge and 'your waiter is wearing blue tonight ' supplement.

    No, don't do that.

Please, we don't need more fuel for the Americans are crude stereotype. (This has all but disappeared, but still exists in isolated pockets.) Just know that all these extra goodies are tacked onto the final bill and your tip is on top of the bottom line your waiter hands you.
