Bebiendo

  • Drinking (Bebiendo), is this a national pastime??

No, not it isn't nearly as bad as it might seem. Yes, hard alcohol is much more prevalent than in American society, but much more in moderation. While eating, beer is almost completely reserved for lunch and late afternoon snacking while wine is extremely versatile: lunch, snacks, dinner, whenever and wherever.

Unlike many companies in England and America where even the slightest sip of alcohol at lunch is prohibited for employees, it is fairly common to have a glass of wine with lunch. White wine (vino blanco), rosé wine (vino rozado), or red wine (tinto) might be placed on your table with your Menú del día if you don't specify a drink at first.

An important note for going out-it is not customary to spend all night getting pissed on pints of beer, unless you spend all night in an Irish pub. Rather, Spaniards drink hard alcohol, whiskey more than any other spirit, when they go out partying. AND, drinking is a little more relaxed. Bars and discos are open past 6am so the night is long and drinks are made strong, so enjoy as the Spanish do: takin´ it easy...
